The Greens
I have received quite a bit of feedback about the appearance of the
greens of late so I have asked Jason to comment:
Omanu greens
are made up of 2 different species of grass being Browntop and Poa annua. At
this time of year the Browntop is in optimum condition creating strong growth
and good colour. The Poa is generally under stress which forces it to seed
prolifically and not grow as much. This results in a mottled appearance and
bumpy greens which are more pronounced in the afternoon
Amplifying
the mottled appearance this year is the exceptional seed strike that occurred
at our last coring resulting in lots of fresh growth from the core holes.
To alleviate
these conditions we utilise a number of strategies including verticutting,
growth regulators, sanding and regular applications of foliar fertiliser which all
help to minimise any impact on the playability of the greens.
